Description : The Odessa National Maritime University (ONMU) today is a modern and progressive educational establishment with high standards and demands to the educational process. The educational process here is a combination of the greatest achievements of the National School of high education of Ukraine together with the modern tendencies in the world maritime education. The University started its existence in June 1930 as the Odessa Institute if Water Transport Engineers. In 1945 the Institute was renamed to the Odessa Institute of Maritime Fleet Engineers. In August 1994, the Institute became the Odessa State Maritime University. On 26th February, 2002, the University was awarded the status of National University by the Decree of the President of Ukraine. In 2003 the ONMU successfully completed the certification of international quality management systems ISO 9001: 2000. The University is a member of: 1. the European Association of Universities (EUA); 2. Southeast European Association of Transport Researches (SETREF); 3. Magna Charta Universitatum; 4. University Network of Central European Initiative (CEI), the ONMU is the CEI Coordinator in Ukraine; 5. International Association of Maritime Universities ((IAMU) etc. Since 1995, ONMU participated in the Trans-European Programs of cooperation in high education (TEMPUS TACIS) and CEI Programmes. Now ONMU is carrying out 2 international projects: 1) CEI Joint Programme “Trans – Regional Cooperation in Maritime Transport and Sustainable Development” 2) EuropeAid (127221/C/SER/MULTI) “Development of Security Management and Maritime Safety and Ship Pollution Prevention for the Black Sea and Caspian Sea”. The University is constantly developing new and maintaining already existing relationships with universities and enterprises of Germany, Italy, Britain, Poland, China, Algeria, Estonia and many other countries. During its 80 years of existence the University has prepared over 40 thousand Ukrainian and foreign specialists in all spheres of the maritime industry. For more than 50 years ONMU has been preparing staff for foreign countries. For this period there has been prepared graduates for 72 countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. The ONMU is under direct subordination of the Ministry of Science sand Education of Ukraine. As a result of state accreditation, the University has been accreted IV-th (the highest) level of high education establishment and is to train student for the Bachelor’s, Specialist’s and Master’s Degrees. The University has got 8 Faculties, which are as follows: Water Transport and Shelf Constructions, Shipbuilding, Ship Engineering, Economics and Management, Transport Technologies and Systems, Faculty of Law, Port Mechanization, Part Time Studies and Center of Post-Graduate Education and Skills Development Training and Pre-Admission Training of Youth. These Faculties train staff for the maritime industry of Ukraine and foreign countries in the world on 12 specialties. These specialties are: "Hydrotechnical Construction", "Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering", "Informational Systems and Technologies", "Ship Power Plants and Equipment", "Exploitation of Ship Power Plants", "Management of Organizations", "Economics of Enterprises", "Organization of Transportation and Transport Management", "Transport Systems", "Jurisprudence", "Project Management", "Handling, Building, Road, Meliorating Machinery and Equipment". It is necessary to stress that the graduates of the Ship Engineering Faculty, specialty - "Exploitation of Ship Power Plants" also obtain International Diploma of Watch Mechanic. There are Post-Graduate and Doctoral studies available at the University on the following subjects: Post-Graduate studies: Theoretical Engineering, Cargo-Handling Machinery, Theory of the Ship, Mechanics and Design of the Ship, Shipbuilding and Ship-Repair Technology, Ship Power Plants, Automatic Management Systems and Progressive Informational Technologies, Project Management and Production Development, Technical Thermal Physics; Industrial Heat-and-Power Engineering; Transport Systems; Bases and Foundations; Hydraulics and Engineering Hydrobiology; Statistics; Economic and Mathematical Modeling; Economics of Enterprise and Production Organizations; Business Accounting, Analysis and Financial Audit; Economics of Transport and Connections; Social and Historical Philosophy; Criminal Law and Criminology, Criminal and Executive Law. Doctoral studies: Bases and Foundations, Economic and Mathematical Modeling. There are 33 Departments at the University and it has 421 lecturers, among whom there are 36 Doctors of Science and Professors as well as 141 candidates of science. There are also 6 representatives of the Ukrainian School of high education, 1 member of New York academy of science, 2 laureates of Ukrainian premium of science and technology. 70% of all heads of Departments are either doctors or professors. There are more than 5 thousand people studying at the university. From the first years of its existence, the University has been the leading scientific and research body, which plays an important role in management, economic and technological process of Ukraine. There are constant state and international conferences held at the university on latest development strategies and new researches in the maritime industry. In 1992 the Odessa National Maritime University was the first in Ukraine to work out and implement multiple structured educational module system following the example of the West European strategy and according Bologna process in educational organization and controlling. The Scientific Research Institute of the ONMU possesses a number of scientific inventions and creations in the sphere of maritime transport. Besides the ONMU played vital role in the development of the following scientific state programmes: “Tanker’s Fleet”, “National Sea and River Transport Development Programme of Ukraine to year 2005”, “Maritime Trade Code” etc. For the last years, the following substantial projects have been carried out here: “Concepts of State Maritime Policies of Ukraine “, “Development Strategies of the Sea and River Transport Industry of Ukraine to year 2011”, “Identifying the Volumes of International Cargo Shipment by Sea and River Transportation in Ukraine” and a number of other programmes. There is also Southern Scientific Centre of Transport Academy of Ukraine at the University. This Centre unites all Southern transport scientific and research enterprises as well as famous scientists and specialist in all spheres of the industry. All scientific work of the University is financed by the state budget of the Ministry of Science and Education and occasionally by other parties of the maritime research spheres. The university has 3 main campuses where there is an engine room, sports gym, arts hall, study rooms, scientific library, research labs (including experimental pool and aerodynamic lab) and an up-to-date media centre with its own publishing house. ONMU has also got its own yacht club with 11 cruising yachts. University occupies an area of 53 900 sq meters. It has an up-dated IT centre with local network as well as outside Internet access. This IT centre assists all students in their highly technological projects and works. The Maritime University provides all the necessary facilities and services for staff and students to achieve success.
